Girl Scout Night at the Smithsonian

A special after-hours museum experience at the National Museum of American History offering a memorable adventure for Girl Scouts and their families and troop leaders. The evening’s theme is “Girls Make History.”

This program is designed to spark imagination, build confidence, and bring science, culture, and history to life, so Girl Scouts can see themselves as history-makers.

Participants receive a National Museum of American History Semiquincentennial “In Pursuit” commemorative guidebook and “I Made History” pins, among other giveaways.

*This event is limited to 250 attendees and available to registered participants of the 58th National Council Session and/or Girl Scouts Unite event. All children must be chaperoned. Transportation not included.

Schedule

6:30 p.m.: Arrival & Welcome

• Girls enter through the Constitution Avenue entrance (pending any unforeseen road closures) and proceed to Flag Hall (one floor up).
• Brief welcome remarks from Smithsonian leadership, National Museum of American History leadership, and Girl Scout leadership.

6:45 p.m.: Gallery Exploration & Activities Begin

Following the welcome, the following spaces will open for exploration, supported by museum educators:

• 2nd floor (2 West) Galleries: In Pursuit of Life, Liberty & Happiness; Many Voices, One Nation; American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith; and The Star-Spangled Banner.

• 3rd floor: Entertainment Nation exhibition

Interactive, hands-on activities on the 2nd floor, including:

• Learning stations featuring a printing press demonstration(2nd floor East) and civic engagement activities in the Unity Square space (2nd floor West).
• A living history experience with Wheel Woman—a costumed interpreter in 1890s attire highlighting social and technological change through bicycling, including shifts in clothing, travel, manufacturing, and women’s empowerment.
• An opportunity to meet a Smithsonian curator and view Girl Scout collections normally held in storage.
• National Museum of the American Latino activity carts, featuring a Celia Cruz shoe activity, listening station, and food spice cart connected to ¡Puro Ritmo! The Musical Journey of Salsa exhibition.
• The Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation will present hands-on Spark!Lab activities focused on invention and design.

Light snacks available in the 2nd floor East Wing.
